Our Lady of Katunayake’s Shrine is Sri Lanka’s Only Shrine, where Most Blessed Virgin Mary made Her appearance in person. The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, made Her appearance in person, for twenty three times, in the Apparition Church of Our Lady of Katunayake’s Shrine. All these Apparitions took place in front of His Holiness The Apostle Rohan Lalith Aponso. At these Apparitions, the Most Blessed Mother delivered several messages to His Holiness The Apostle to reveal to the world. These messages were delivered by Her to the Holy Apostle in this Apparition Church itself.
Among these Twenty Three Apparitions of Blessed Virgin Mary, the Apparition which took place for the 18th occasion, on 27th July 1977, was a significant apparition. It was an exceptional Apparition because on that day, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary made Her appearance in person in front of His Holiness The Apostle Rohan Lalith Aponso, carrying Baby Jesus in Her left hand. A lovely Statue of Blessed Virgin Mary carrying Baby Jesus in Her left hand is established above the Main Altar of the Apparition Church of Our Lady of Katunayake’s Shrine to symbolize this exceptional Apparition. This Statue is the Main Statue of the Apparition Church. It is established right above the Main Altar.
This Most Blessed Apparition completed 43 years in this year 2020 on 27th July.
Meanwhile, all arrangements were finalized on Saturday 3rd October 2020 in Holy Apostles’ Peter and Paul Garden of Our Lady of Katunayake’s Shrine to conduct the Recitation of Rosary as usual at 4.30pm.
Rosary Candles are lighted by the devotees at the commencement of Recitation of Rosary.
While devotees were lighting Rosary Candles, a most amazing Miraculous Spectacle was taking place in the Apparition Church. A sweet aroma of Jasmine began to emanate from the Statue of Blessed Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus, established in the Apparition Church. Subsequently, this miraculous fragrance spread throughout the Apparition Church and in the entire Shrine Ground.
This was the 2nd occasion this Miraculous Spectacle took place. In last year 2019, on Saturday 27th July evening, Jasmine aroma began to emanate from the Statue of Blessed Mother, established in the Apparition Church, while devotees were lighting candles as usual at the foot of the Statue of Blessed Mother.
As before, in this year too, on Saturday evening 3rd October 2020, devotees were given the opportunity to feel the sweet aroma of Jasmine, emanating from the Statue of Blessed Mother carrying Baby Jesus. When devotees got the opportunity to feel this Most Miraculous Spectacle, all of them, most reverently, offered their prayers at the foot of the Statue of Blessed Mother. Some devotees were seen going on their knees across the Apparition Church and kissing the floor, where the Sanctuary of the Statue of Blessed Mother, which was emanating Jasmine aroma, is established, and offered their reverence to the Blessed Mother.
